Spanish La Liga Clubs Postponed April 2-3 Games for LFP Strike

Spanish La Liga league games on April 2 and 3 have been postponed due to dispute between clubs and the government against television revenue.

Several of Spain's La Liga top flight club's have broken ranks and signaled, their conflict to a threat by the professional soccer league (LFP) to postpone a round of games next month over a dispute with the government.

The league made the statement after "the lack of progress" in discussions with Spanish government officials, against the clubs insists to revoke a law guaranteeing one game per week is broadcast on free television.

It also wants guarantees about, how much funds it is entitled to receive from lottery revenue.

In a statement, the Spanish league cited a "lack of progress" in talks involving the Spanish government to resolve this problem soon. The clubs wants to a complete shell out TV package, such as the ones in Italy and England; in dispute they need the extra revenue.

The league, which represents first and second division clubs, has the backing of the Spanish football federation. But, the clubs including Villarreal and Sevilla specified on Wednesday, they did not support a LFP strike.

On the weekend under threat, April 2/3 games, La Liga leaders Barcelona are due to Villarreal, while Sevilla play at Zaragoza and second-placed Real Madrid face Sporting Gijon. The LFP told on Tuesday that, the latest discussions between league officials, the government and parliamentary groups had failed to produce any progress and it stood by its decision to strike.

The stoppage will affect both the Segunda Division and the Primera Division, even though not all clubs sustain the move. The reports in Spain states, there may be further legal moves by clubs who want to play.

Villarreal leader Fernando Roig expressed to support for the league's bid to get the free TV rule lifted. But, a strike was the wrong way to go about it and particularly at a time, when the Spanish economy was struggling.
